Graphing maps in ancient 'RPGs' tends to lead to being sidetracked.

At what point do I get uber-nerd status for such tedious work?

Now playing Donkey Kong Country Returns 3d(s) I'm about a hour and half into it and so far the game is great. I have but a few complaints that stem from nostalgia: no kremlings, most likely no k rool, no funky kong, no underwater levels, and most likely no other Kongs besides Donkey, Diddy and Cranky. This is a long list of complaints to some, but notice they're not complaints that take away from the big four of making a good game: controls, sound, gameplay, and graphics (I don't mean "realism" graphics - good graphics means anything SuperNES age to now). So far the game is great even with the complaints mentioned above. The controls are smooth, DK and Diddy have cool moves, e.g. the ground pound and diddy's booster pack, the music is very DK country, and the levels are actually challenging. I like it. So far. There may be something down the road that will disappoint me in a big way, but I doubt it.

I think I'm giving up on Borderlands 2. I made it past (SPOILERS)the part where you take out Angel(/SPOILERS) and next time I fire the game up it takes me to my save point way back at Thousand Cuts before I meet Claptrap to start the assault on the facility. I have tried going through it all again but no matter what, every time I start the game now it takes me back to that save(it says its synced to The Cloud yet it loves this save point for whatever reason). So I'll just watch the end online or read about it. I'm sure Jack gets what's coming to him but it's frustrating that the game is doing this. Hurray cloud saves!

The Starship Damrey - I had been curious about this one since I heard the release. Without trying to be spoilery, it's a great game but I was a little surprised by how short it was.I guess it's like that in terms of Project Firestart too although after one play through I could probably finish it in 1/4th the time if I give it another go. I also went into it expecting a few more scares although what is there is good. I actually thought it was going to be harder than this but not so much. The only real challenge I've come across is the Captain's Regret puzzle. I'm sure I'll crack that one this evening.
There is a twist there I didn't expect exactly and I also thought it would end differently (given how these sorts of derelict spaceship stories usually end up) although I guess I need to get another L5 game to see the ending-ending.

All the Guild games are short--they were spread across two carts in Japan, 4 games each, and the idea was to make short, fun, experimental games.

Ok then. I wasn't aware of that so it was a surprise but it makes sense.

The Captain's Regret puzzle is a little weird, you solve it in much the way you'd expect to, but the actual answer might be different from what you'd expect. If that makes any sense at all.
As for needing another Guild game for the last part of the ending, I assume you're talking about the "Bonus Content" on the main menu? It just unlocks a short story that takes place before the events of the game. It's not related to the ending, but it explains a part of the game and gives a little character development to some of the crew. Interesting, but don't go out and buy Crimson Shroud for it (you should be buying Crimson Shroud for Crimson Shroud).
There's actually a lot of the story in Damrey that goes unexplained or is left open. Which kind of works for this sort of story.

Yeah I figured it out but it wasn't the first place I was thinking of.
I got the impression from something the game says that it shows you the final showdown with the bonus content. I probably misinterpreted it. Still, its a great little game.

Zork: The Grand Inquisitor - Taking advantage of GOG.com's summer sale I nabbed this sort of sequel of Return To Zork. I liked RTZ back in '94, much better than Myst. GI has some recognizable actors in it, I was a little surprised to see the actor who played Face from The A-Team. anyways, I haven't made it too far in this yet but its got a few amusing or funny things about it where its obviously trying to be a comedic adventure.
Strike Suit Zero - Woohoo, a space dogfighter game. I haven't made it far enough to actually get the Strike Suit thing but so far so good. It's certainly not the most complex control scheme you can get out of these games but also not the most basic I've seen. There's a bit of voice acting and its actually solid for the most part, I haven't heard a lot of cringe inducing stuff which is always nice. I keep comparing this to one of my favorite dogfighting games from recent years, the forgotten Project Freedom: Space Interceptor. That game certainly wasn't perfect and it had a lot of bad, poorly acted dialogue but it was a fun game.
Graphics are solid although aside from the JJ Abrams lens flare, there is one aspect about it I don't like that is common with all other space games I have played in recent years, the static floating problem. i.e. structures that are there for adding to the environments just hang around, no physics about them. This kind of takes me out of it - when I fly into the aftermath of a huge space battle I want to see the broken pieces flying around smashing into each other, being affected by gravity, etc. With today's physics tech it should be possible but instead everything just sits there suspended in the ether and the game tries to rely on unrealistic but pretty to look at space cloud backgrounds. It would be passable on smashed up space ships if the same thing didn't happen with stuff like asteroids too in these games. That part it doesn't make sense to me since there have been older 3D games where asteroids actually rotate around through space. So why all the space fighting games I've played in recent times don't do that, I dunno. I guess even canned animations on space rocks must be harder than 3D people or something.

Street Fighter 3 on Dreamcast. Still rocks after all these years. Also slowly, and I mean slooooooly, working through Shining Force 3 Sen. 1 on Saturn. So far I'm digging it but I think I'm missing out on a bunch of references to SF1 and 2 - been too long since I plugged either of those in.
Also, howdy ho. It's been a while.

WiiU: Injustice: Gods Among Us Borsalio is amused because I declared, with utter confidence, that "I'd never play this game." Well, two things happened: 1. The Wii U got no games at all 2. The wife was interested in the story, being a DC fan. So "never" became "buy." It's a super polished experience. I felt the second half of the story was mailed in (yes, I know there is a comic that they are basically lifting from wholesale), but liked the premise. It is a pretty fun experience for a fighting game SP though. 3DS: Shin Megami Tensei IV My first non-Personal Megaten game. It is great! I do feel a little funny with the occult subject matter, but I do like the mechanics behind it. It is a nice looking game too. Bugs v. Tanks An OK, slower paced shooter. Character progression stuff (tank parts and such) don't have much impact, which kills this game as a 8 dollar title. Get it on sale. Sakura Samurai my Gold reward for this year. Nice little eShop title! Good sword fighting mechanics. Nice depth with the towns in the overworld. A lot of game for the money. 3D looks great too. Donkey Kong Country 3DS - Will play this more later- this was what I got with the $30 Fire Emblem/Megaten credit.

Occult? Jesus. There's nothing at all occult about this game, it's just the typical mangling by the Japanese of Western religious 'mythology' and bears almost no resemblance whatsoever to anything that one might reasonably label "occult".
(I also HATE how they use the Japanese pronunciation of samurai, i.e. sah-moo-rye, instead of sam-uh-rye. They are speaking *ENGLISH*! NOT JAPANESE! Grates on my nerves! It's like assholes that say "kay-bec" for Quebec or "Pokki-stahn" for Pakistan. Fucking poseur assholery that is *incorrect* for English speakers!)
