Yeah. Ys 1 and 2 were overhead view action RPGs, while Ys 3 took a sidescrolling view. It wasn't terribly well-received, and future Ys games went back to the overhead view. (Actually, Ys 3 and Zelda 2 kind of have a bit in common).
But I still enjoyed Ys 3 for what it was. That being said, Falcom eventually went back and remade Ys 3 to be more in-line with the rest of the series, and as ECM says, it's pretty amazing.

Cool. This sounds like a game series worth checking out.

Super Catch-Up Edition (hold the fries):
Sakura Samurai (3DS): never got around to playing this when it came out, but I grabbed it since it was on sale and it's pretty fun. It's dead simple, but it still manages to be extremely playable, probably thanks to that slightly unknowable Nintendo-ness aobut it.
Plus, for $5, it *shames* 99% of the shit on iOS and Android.
Kersploosh (3DS): $3 and I feel like I got taken for a ride. The idea here is your piloting a stone down a well (presumably to kill a troll at the bottom...I think), but the control on the stone are pretty loose[footnote:1]Yes, I know, I'm sure it gets a lot better with newer, unlocked, stones but I'll never find out.[/footnote] and that basically sucks any and all fun there might be had here.
Effectively, this *is* the type of game you'd expect to find on iOS and Android. For free. With DLC stones. That would then make the developer millions of dollars a day. Because people playing--and enjoying (this is important)--games on iOS and Android can't remember to breathe without the help of a respirator.
New Super Mario Bros U (WiiU): yeah, back on this, trying to get the last few Star Coins I'm missing, all in the 'bonus' area that unlocks after you get every other Star Coin in the game. Some of these levels are *brutally* difficult, at least compared to the pretty tame difficulty of the main game, which is nice because I'm near-100% certain that most of the people I know will *never* be able to get all of them on these levels. Which will make me feel (more) superior in my game-playing ability than I already do.
Mortals.
(All that said, I still really miss the coin-gathering gimmick of NSMB2...not sure what that says about me, alas.)
Bit.Trip Runner 2 Demo (WiiU): this is something I'll get aroudn to eventually but it falls afoul of the fairly-stringent "no DLG over $10 rule", so I'll have to wait on the full version. On Steam. When it's on sale for $5 (or less) at some point.
Super House of Dead Ninjas (PC): speaking of under $5 games on sale on Steam, this is a blast! It's a super-fast, super-slick, 'retro' side-scroller featuring a none-too-stealthy ninja, destroying enemy after enemy while governed by a strict time limit--if you stop killing guys for too long (and, therefore, stop moving) it's game over. Fast, fun, and frenetic--basically all the hallmarks of a great, classic, arcade game, albeit not in arcades. Of course.
(Note: this is *not* an auto-run platformer like Runner.)
Etrian Odyssey 4 (3DS): without question the best in the series, at least up to the third world and level 40-ish, though the balloon sequences seem to me to be a bit less compelling than the sailing in 3. It's basically more of what you love about the series, albeit now with polygonal, instead of sprite-based, enemies.
They also had a few new layers of complexity to spice it up, while streamlining hte interface and tedious bits to make it a very compelling package and the best pure dungeon crawler since, well, EO3.
Got more: Fire Emblem, Sly 4, and a couple of others, but those will have to wait for another time!
*poof*

Super Mario 3D Land is the best 3D Mario, period, and probably the 3rd best Mario platformer of all time, behind SMB3 and SMW. *waits for Borsalio to show up and say something about SMB2* (I'm almost 100% certain Borslaio is a SMB2 guy, without even actually knowing it.) I can get behind this post. This version of SMB on the 3ds is pretty much made of awesome. I felt like this is what Super Mario 62 II could be like if they only made the levels much bigger. P.S. The music in Super Mario 64 was pretty sweet and some of the tracks in 3D land reminded me of them.

Still playing Bladestorm. On occasion. Still haven't been consistent with CV: Portrait of Ruin but I'm not too far from the end.
Tried to get my son to play something that isn't Minecraft with Lego Star Wars on PC. Unfortunately the controls are bollocks so I need to get a wired 360 pad for that.
Did get him to play some Psychonauts (PC) for a little bit. That was the first time I tried it as well. Interesting game from the little we played of it.
Also played some of the Legend of Grimrock with the update. I was thinking, it would be fun to have a Catacombs Abyss remake based on something like LoG. I loved CA back in the day and now they have a pack on GOG for it to which I will be downloading this week.
Otherwise at the arcade all of my games are suddenly breaking down. Problems with Outrun 2, Blazing Angels, Asteroids Deluxe, NBA Jam. Sigh.

My MMO kick will never die mainly due to Final Fantasy XI. This might surprise some but the game is going stronger then ever and SE just released on the 27th of this month a brand new exspansion pack called "Seekers of Adoulin". The amount of people playing right now is insane but even more so how much SE spent in developing this add-on. Hard to believe that a Playstation 2 can run this game with how pretty it looks. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHTDuMi5FXg

I should add all the arcade goodness I got to play this past Saturday. Various games I have only read about but never had the opportunity to actually play:
Major Havoc (my favorite) Xevious Tempest Marble Madness Roadblasters (which I have bought from this guy)
He also had Gravitar, Joust, Donkey Kong 2, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Space Duel, Assault, Frontline but I didn't have time to play those unfortunately.

Devil Survivor 2: Finally, after starting this, putting it on hold for like a year, coming back to it and starting over, and playing a bunch for a few weeks, I finished this one. Enjoyed the final battle quite a bit, it's another one of those classic Megaten battles that feels ridiculous and destroys you at first, but can be dominated with the right plan.
Amusingly, Devil Survivor 1 and 2 remind me a lot of the difference between Persona 3 and 4. The first game (DS1 and P3) has the better overall story, but the second game (DS2 and P4) has much stronger characters. The second game also manages to really fine-tune the previous game's issues. DS2 was a heck of an upgrade, and it fixed most of the issues from DS1 (like making it viable to have more than one Phys character). I hope Atlus keeps going with the Devil Survivor series (or tosses some of the mechanics into SMT vs FE).
But beating DS2 means I finally get to start...
Soul Hackers: It feels very much like a PS1-era Megaten title! Because it is! That means you get some good (awesome cyberpunk setting and feel) and some bad (super clunky interface). I'm only like half an hour in, but I've already met some sort of psychic coyote, which is a plus over most games.

CastleVania: Portrait of ruin (DS): Finally finished it. Great game but I could play through it again to discover more stuff.
Gunman Clive (3DS) : Cheap download, ok game. Not an intense run n' gun like Metal Slug, it's a few notches below that. Several times its more about platforming than shooting.
Borderlands 2 (PC): Inching my way to the end. I thought I was going to be at the end but noticed that it should probably be a little harder than it was and of course it was a head-fake ending. I'm still pretty sure I'm not too far off though.
RoadBlasters (Arcade and Lynx): Getting this at my arcade meant I had to break out the Lynx version to to compare. Such a solid conversion for a handheld. Quite enjoyable at the arcade but I need to work on maintaining multipliers.
Endless Ocean Blue World (Wii): I'm trying to finish this one too and I don't think it's too far off but I keep getting sidetracked by salvaging stuff. EDIT: Finished this one yesterday!

In which I play a bunch of Guild0X games.
Starship Damrey: So the whole point of this game is that it doesn't give a lot of direction and that you shouldn't read up on it before you play, so I won't say much. Just two main things:
1. I friggin' loved this game. 2. That doesn't mean you should go out and buy it.
This game was damn near like someone read my mind and designed around what I would want to see in a 3-hour sci-fi horror adventure game, so I'm going to like it more than most. I still think people should give it a shot if it sounds interesting to them, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to wait for a sale either.
Still, nice to see some people out there still know how to build a good horror atmosphere in a game. There's a scare in there that was worth the price of admission alone for me.
Liberation Maiden: Other than the fact that you can't control this game without getting a cramp in your left hand, it's not too bad. It reminds me of ZOE a bit in that it's trying to do the whole fast-paced anime robot fighting thing. I do hate it when games make you spin the stylus really fast on the touchscreen though.
Aeroporter: ECM said this one was terrible. After about 20 minutes of play, I actually like it. Not sure how long that'll hold up.
I should probably play Crimson Shroud since that's the "good" one, but so far I'm happy with the output of the Guild series.

It's terrible, but you'll need to play it past 20-minutes to realize this. (The difficulty ramp is completely broken--it goes from a joke to 3DS-smashing over the course of 2-3 levels.)
The hand-cramping in LM pretty much ruined that game for me--maybe it'd work better on that ridiculous Kid Icarus stand.
Crimson Shroud is amazing.
Damrey is good, too, but I think the appeal is very, very limited to normal people.
(It also reminds me, a great deal, of Project Firestart on C64, but I'm sure that's merely coincidence and not homage/rip-off.)

I've been on a classics kick again. Not sure if its nostalgia or something more sinister.
Caverns of Zoarre continues and I found some virtual graph paper to make mapping out the levels easier. Perhaps I'll post those online for the 3 ppl that might be interested, when I manage to finish them all.
Found a game called Dungeon Explorer from 1990. I played that quite a bit back when I had a 486 with an EGA monitor(didn't take long for me to upgrade to glorious VGA!). There was a Windows 3.1 game that came out not long after it which is similar called Castle of the Winds. I played both games extensively BITD and DE still holds up for me.
Also I found Dune 2000. I played Dune 2 but never had the pleasure of D2k, which is pretty much the same thing but addresses some of the flaws the first one had. My son really likes watching me play it, now if I could just get him to try it.
Downloaded Sega Genesis Classics Vol. 1 from Amazon and so I finally get to play some stuff I missed out on in the 90s. My exposure to the Genesis was limited to a few games - Sonic 1 & 2, Moonwalker, Strider 2, Shinobi 3, Altered Beast, Sewer Shark and Batman Returns. I've caught up a little on the WiiVC with a few downloads there but this is great and I see there are a few other packs to get. So I finally get to see this Gain ground ECM has been raving about. chances of me finding an arcade version of that seem low - that was quite the cabinet.
I guess I need to finish Borderlands 2. I should have finished it by now but I like getting sidetracked.
