1. ECM gets PS4. 2. ECM hooks up PS4. 3. ECM powers on PS4. 4. ECM updates PS4. 5. PS4 bricks. 6. ECM returns PS4 to Amazon. Postscript: ECM is not remotely alone.

Seriously though, before hearing any of these horror stories, I cancelled my PS4 and Xbox One preorders today.
I cancelled them because I don't even play what I have now, why would I spend another $1,000 for more dust collectors. But it was still very difficult for me and had a heavy heart after I left the store.
Thank you ECM for posting this, your misfortune has had one positive outcome for what it's worth.

Yeah, it's going to be interesting in a few weeks when the dust clears and we can figure out just what percentage of the PS4 launch shipments were problematic. There seems to be a batch or twenty with faulty HDMI ports.
Your problem sounds different though, since the update killed it. I know I've been reading some stuff about how it's better to download the update onto a USB stick and install it that way, instead of letting the system do it normally. This is, of course, ludicrous.
I got my system, but I have yet to hook it up (which is more due to how busy I am this weekend as opposed to fear of a problem). I'll probably get around to it tomorrow some time. Hoping for the best. This is going to be an issue going forward with hardware launches, though. The Wii U had some bricks with their day 1 update, and I don't doubt the Xbox One will see issues as well. What a wonderful future for the industry.

The U bricks were down to people turning off their machines mid-update, that is not the case with the PS4. I let mine sit and do its thing and it came back on at one point but, alas, no picture and no ability to enter safe mode.
The bricks fit into four categories so far:
*Overheating: red line of death and/or massive GPU artifacting. *Updating FW: system bricks after update is complete. *Faulty HDMI: a bent pin OR the connection to the mobo is loose. *DOA.
(It's possible some of these have the same cause, but those are the most cited problems in isolation.)
This is, quite literally, the worst console launch in history, given the number of complaints--no other machine even comes close on day one. (At least the RRODs didn't start showing up until several months after launch.)

There's going to be a lot of disappointed kids (and angry parents) on Christmas day.

And now the conspiracy theories have hatched and people rae blaming the Foxconn factory for sabotage.
(What they don't get, however, that even if this is true, it's still Sony's fault for not doing lot checks and/or shipping units they knew to be defective.)

Given how quickly they diagnosed the HDMI port problem I have to wonder whether they knew about the problem or that it was going to be a potential one.
What will really suck is if they have a RROD problem of their own down the road.

They have an RROD problem NOW. One of the major failures is heat-related.

Ah I didn't read about that one yet. Most sites are trying to make it look like a simple HDMI connector issue.
Given the similarities between the hardware on the X1 and PS4, could this indicate some X1 issues or has MS probably made sure their cooling solution is smarter this time?

Yeah my bad, skipped over that one. Fired, etc. etc. But at least I'm not Sony right now.
