* taken a day off of work to play a new game that just came out? I cut school for a week when Phantasy Star 2 came out. Unfortunately, most of my work experience involves playing games in some form or another, so no? * played games for hours on end while you had a raging fever? I spent a week and a half playing PSO (when it was brand-new on DC) w/ a raging fever, raging sore throat, raging headache and raging girlfriend standing behind me most of the time going on about how "you'll never get better" etc. etc. (It may have taken a little longer to get better *but* I out-leveled pretty much everyone, so the fever-induced sterility was worth it!) * paid over $100 for a game that wasn't on the PC Engine? Let's see: *Panorama Cotton: $100 on the dot *NEW* from Game Dude in SoCal 'cause they had *no* idea what they had...and this was in 2000, long after it was known as rare and way, waaaay out of print. *Psychic Warlock Taromaru: well over $100 and worth every damn penny! *Batman: the Mega Drive version, a year before it showed up on Genesis. *Many, many PCBs: Guwange, Macross, Gaiaopolis, XEXEX, AVP, etc. etc. etc. There's more, but I think I've proven my nerd street cred sufficiently. (And reminded myself that I could have probably bought a BMW M3 w/ the money I've spent on games over the years, *sob*.) * played to the end of a game (Xenogears) that you realized halfway through (massive exposition overload) you didn't enjoy anymore (Chucifixion)? Yes, I'm living that right now w/ El Shaddai. * heard of Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, coming to a game store near you on July 5, 2011? What the devil is this? I swear I've heard about this from...somewhere? But, for the life of me, I can't place it...

* taken a day off of work to play a new game that just came out?
This is something I've actually kind of wanted to do, but never really have. Someday, I will. I probably faked a sickness back in elementary school or high school to do this, though.
* played games for hours on end while you had a raging fever?
Playing games is pretty much all I do when sick (besides sleeping). Most recently, I did this with Trinity Universe. I think it made me sicker.
* paid over $100 for a game that wasn't on the PC Engine?
Shining Force 2 might have been close to $100 retail back in the day. Other than that, well, there's Steel Battalion.
* played to the end of a game (Xenogears) that you realized halfway through (massive exposition overload) you didn't enjoy anymore (Chucifixion)?
Well, I quit Xenogears halfway through. I usually give up on stuff that isn't fun anymore, but I did slog through Suikoden 4 out of brand loyalty. It wasn't too bad though.
* heard of Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, coming to a game store near you on July 5, 2011?
I heard that one of the dudes who worked on that is a real jerk.

More questions:
*Had a girlfriend/boyfriend that actually liked to play games as a hobby, not to humor you and/or to avoid having sex w/ you?
*1cc'ed *any* shooter? (not FPS'! Shoot 'em ups w/ spaceships or psychic-powered teens or robotic rabbits!)
*Attended any sort of gaming convention/show, be it E3, Penny Arcade Expo, Classic Gaming Expo, AMOA, etc. etc.?
*Still regularly visit arcades? (I'll define regular, sadly, as at least every 6 months, sigh.)
*Gotten by on just ramen, water and oxygen (or some calorically-deficient analog) because you just had to have a game? If so, which one?
*Bought an import game from any country? If so, which one(s)? (This question brought to you by someone determined to undermine fei's--and as collateral damage, CHI's--gamer cred.)
*Named a pet/child/appendage after a videogame character?

And my answers:
*Had a girlfriend/boyfriend that actually liked to play games as a hobby, not to humor you and/or to avoid having sex w/ you?
I have actually had more than one! And both weren't (entirely) hideous. One I had to train up to it, but the other came like that out of the shrinkwrap.
*1cc'ed *any* shooter? (not FPS'! Shoot 'em ups w/ spaceships or psychic-powered teens or robotic rabbits!)
This is kinda something I do as a matter of course, so I won't bother listing a billion shooters and make fei feel even less like a man than he already does.
*Attended any sort of gaming convention/show, be it E3, Penny Arcade Expo, Classic Gaming Expo, AMOA, etc. etc.?
Yes, pretty much all of them from 1997-2003 and I *never* want to step foot in one again...(trust me, after years of it you, too, would get very, very tired of it).
*Still regularly visit arcades? (I'll define regular, sadly, as at least every 6 months, sigh.)
I do! There's a pretty massive arcade up here w/ tons and tons of games, though the only downside is that they're not exactly on top of new releases, though they did just get Galaga, so they're catching up!
*Gotten by on just ramen, water and oxygen (or some calorically-deficient analog) because you just had to have a game? If so, which one?
Pretty much every game released between 1992 and 1997 fits the bill here for me since I was in college and/or looking for a job, but some notable ones were Lightening Force and Sonic 3. Plus, it helped keep me lean, so it was win-win except for the anemia. And rickets. And scurvy. And herpes...wait...no...that was one of those girlfriends that liked playing games. Bitch.
*Bought an import game from any country? If so, which one(s)? (This question brought to you by someone determined to undermine fei's--and as collateral damage, CHI's--gamer cred.)
I'm pretty certain *everyone* here is going to have a list the length of their arms, so I'm not going to even bother because I'd be here for days just like everyone else....except fei (and CHI).
*Named a pet after a videogame character?
Listen, I'm a geek of some renown, but even I have to draw the line somewhere...right after Pac-Man...the mouse.

You know darn well I imported Zangeki No Reginliev! Yes, I know, but in relation to everyone else who's been buying the things since at least their teenage years, you have a lot of ground to make up! Plus, admitting that ZNR is your first import has already had the desired effect! MWHAHAHAHA!

*Bought an import game from any country? If so, which one(s)? (This question brought to you by someone determined to undermine fei's--and as collateral damage, CHI's--gamer cred.) --- Most of my games are imports. I hooked friends at college on imports too... namely, those Saturn games referenced above! Probably the coolest was Real Bout Fatal Fury; along with Street Fighter Alpha 2, we ran a tournament to crown the king of kings (these tournaments never ended, because new people like Phaison the Wild Jackal kept signing up, which was actually one of my roommates in a mask playing as Super Akuma). But anyways: one guy I knew actually started up a Fatal Fury website in honor of Real Bout, we watched all the Fatal Fury anime to feed our obsession (the atmosphere during the motion picture was electric), and one day when a girl came by, she saw us playing and excitedly exclaimed "OH MY GOD! IT'S TERRY BOGARD!" And I gotta tell you, that was a lot more gratifying than "OH MY GOD! YOU ALL ARE SUCH GEEKS!" Yeah, I have a few 'games bringing us together stories' but I'll keep 'em brief--DJ, crank up that funky "Getting to Know You": *First day of college, literally minutes after I move into my dorm room (a few days before school began), I hooked up my SNES, plugged in SFII (vanilla version, cause Turbo hadn't come out yet) and the people on my floor just kept coming by/in to play. By the end of those three, pre-school, days I had already made fast friends w/ a few of them and those sessions managed to get everyone to know one another w/o doing some sort of weird 'getting to know you' chicanery...like oh, I dunno, asking weird questions about one another. *Later on that same year, I end up working at RHA (Resident Hall Assocation) under the government's inane 'work study' program which, not surprisingly, more resemlbed indentured servitude where the work end outweighed studying by about 10:1. Anyway, like Zig, we held tournaments w/ SFII (mainly): we'd get the RHA projector (which had S-Video ins, thankfully) and threw it up on a dorm wall and, man, playing games on a 100"+ diagonal screen is pretty sweet. We'd order pizza and the area would be a madhouse for three hours on a weekday evening. The only downside is I was not allowed to compete because, of course, I'd have crushed everyone (this isn't a boast, it's just to point out that before games were super mega popular w/ the college/frat crowd, nobody played them outside of geeks and little kids). *The final example (for now) would be a couple of years later, after transferring schools (money=tight, so out went private and in came public) I would set up Super Bomberman 2 and the people on my floor would take turns getting the shit beat out of them by me. The nice thing about it, though, was we basically played that game *every* night for almost the entire school year and it *never* got old. And, as with the dorm SFII matches of yore, it really brought the people on the floor together. So the moral is: games can, indeed, be used for great good and great evil like, oh, missing a mid-term because you stayed up too late one night playing Ristar and sleeping right through the exam...oops.

* taken a day off of work to play a new game that just came out?
I can't remember if I took the day off or if it was a holiday or something, but I remember there being a day I would normally have been working that I instead spent hanging out at home playing Blood Will Tell for hours until I completed it.
* played games for hours on end while you had a raging fever?
Last summer I was really sick for a very long time. I decided it was a good time to play through all the PCE F1 Circus and Power League games. Those weren't the best of times (though most of the Power Leagues are pretty good).
* paid over $100 for a game that wasn't on the PC Engine?
No, but Gleylancer cost me close to $100.
* played to the end of a game (Xenogears) that you realized halfway through (massive exposition overload) you didn't enjoy anymore (Chucifixion)?
I'm insane and usually feel compelled to complete a game if I purchase it, so I've played through lots and lots of games that I didn't enjoy. From the start, I didn't find Xenogears enjoyable at all, but I did endure it all the way to the end.
* heard of Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, coming to a game store near you on July 5, 2011?
Whenever I hear "Earth Defense Force," I think of ketchup sandwiches.
*Had a girlfriend/boyfriend that actually liked to play games as a hobby, not to humor you and/or to avoid having sex w/ you?
Yes, there was one who actually liked cool stuff like ActRaiser and Asuka 120%, not just the Tetris/Mario sort of shit girls often enjoy.
*1cc'ed *any* shooter? (not FPS'! Shoot 'em ups w/ spaceships or psychic-powered teens or robotic rabbits!)
Yes, quite a few. I remember thrashing Cyber Core on one credit the very first time I played it.
*Attended any sort of gaming convention/show, be it E3, Penny Arcade Expo, Classic Gaming Expo, AMOA, etc. etc.?
Nope.
*Still regularly visit arcades? (I'll define regular, sadly, as at least every 6 months, sigh.)
Haven't paid regular visits to an arcade since the high school days when my friends and I would occasionally go play some Street Fighter II after class.
*Gotten by on just ramen, water and oxygen (or some calorically-deficient analog) because you just had to have a game? If so, which one?
There was this one time when cash was tight but I spotted a sealed Blood Gear (which a bud of mine had gotten me psyched for) and had to grab it. There was another instance when I really shouldn't have been picking up more than one game given my financial situation at the time, and I'd gone to the store to buy R-Type Final (ugh), but felt drawn to Chaos Legion (awesome), and bought 'em both.
*Bought an import game from any country? If so, which one(s)? (This question brought to you by someone determined to undermine fei's--and as collateral damage, CHI's--gamer cred.)
Lots and lots, mostly PC Engine stuff.
*Named a pet/child/appendage after a videogame character?
Years ago, I had a pet hamster that I named Cloud. I'd like to say it was just because the thing was this little white puffball, but I'm sure there was some Final Fantasy VII influence there.

Blood Gear and Blood Will Tell are both super mega awesome games. I'd really like to see the former get an English patch at some point so more people would be willing to actually play this (forgotten?) WestOne[footnote:1]The creators of Wonder Boy in Monster World and its awesome sequel, finally getting released in English here late this year! (Only a decade after a fan patch! WTG SEGA!)[/footnote] gem.

taken a day off of work to play a new game that just came out?
Not work but school, can't remember the game, some rpg for sure.
* played games for hours on end while you had a raging fever?
No
* paid over $100 for a game that wasn't on the PC Engine?
Yes, but games are very expensive in Mexico. I can't even remember the game.
* played to the end of a game (Xenogears) that you realized halfway through (massive exposition overload) you didn't enjoy anymore (Chucifixion)?
Xenogears has it's flaws but i really like it, including that part. Fucking furball.
The closest thing might be Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Started interesting, then at some point the game forgets about all the characters and just focus on the lead guy, also the level design was quite tedious.
* heard of Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, coming to a game store near you on July 5, 2011?
Never heard of it.
*Had a girlfriend/boyfriend that actually liked to play games as a hobby, not to humor you and/or to avoid having sex w/ you?
Women despise me for the most part, so that will be a no.
*1cc'ed *any* shooter? (not FPS'! Shoot 'em ups w/ spaceships or psychic-powered teens or robotic rabbits!)
Nope, i always get clumsy at some point in the game.
*Attended any sort of gaming convention/show, be it E3, Penny Arcade Expo, Classic Gaming Expo, AMOA, etc. etc.?
Yes, two in Mexico city.
*Still regularly visit arcades? (I'll define regular, sadly, as at least every 6 months, sigh.)
No more arcades over here, the last one i visited was years ago.
*Gotten by on just ramen, water and oxygen (or some calorically-deficient analog) because you just had to have a game? If so, which one?
Nope, if i don't eat well i get in a very bad mood.
*Bought an import game from any country? If so, which one(s)? (This question brought to you by someone determined to undermine fei's--and as collateral damage, CHI's--gamer cred.)
Yes, mostly dreamcast and saturn games
*Named a pet/child/appendage after a videogame character?
Yep, a dog, Millia (from Guilty Gear)

*taken a day off of work to play a new game that just came out?
I've never done this. My character gets a +10 on all of these type of morality checks. I would have considered this for EDF but I get the day off for that anyway! Booyah!
* played games for hours on end while you had a raging fever?
Yep, did this regularly as a kid. As an adult, I haven't been sick in over a year and half, knock on wood, so I can't remember doing this in recent years.
* paid over $100 for a game that wasn't on the PC Engine?
Nope. Yeah, I know, that makes me uncool, or something.
* played to the end of a game (Xenogears) that you realized halfway through (massive exposition overload) you didn't enjoy anymore (Chucifixion)?
Yeah I'd say Contact (DS) got to be a real grind. I'm glad I made it because it has a really cool ending.
* heard of Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, coming to a game store near you on July 5, 2011?
Good grief man! Heard of it? HEARD OF IT!?!?!?!?!!
EDF!!!! EDF!!!!!!! EDF!!!!!!!! EDF!!!!!!!! /runs to smash some bugs
*Had a girlfriend/boyfriend that actually liked to play games as a hobby, not to humor you and/or to avoid having sex w/ you?
My wife was a bit more of a gamer, before her various responsibilities have pushed that aside. I remember her playing Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones quite a bit, she got all the way to the final boss on that one, and got pissed cause she couldn't get through it. She played with the "never let anyone die" style.
Growing up, she liked the NES and SNES and particularly liked Zelda, Final Fantasy (FF III/VI is one of her faves), and Resident Evil (later on, of course). She still really enjoys watching me play Resident Evil games, and occasionally gets into other games that catch her interest (the latest being LA Noire).
*1cc'ed *any* shooter? (not FPS'! Shoot 'em ups w/ spaceships or psychic-powered teens or robotic rabbits!)
If I did this, it would have been between the ages of 7-12. I remember getting real good at Life Force on the NES in particular. But I was never a high score lovin', "gotta get em' all" type of guy.
*Attended any sort of gaming convention/show, be it E3, Penny Arcade Expo, Classic Gaming Expo, AMOA, etc. etc.?
I've been to GDC (Game Developer's Conference) three times: 2006, 2007, and 2009.
*Still regularly visit arcades? (I'll define regular, sadly, as at least every 6 months, sigh.)
Yep, I take the kiddo to Chuck e. Cheese, which is sadly the best by far in the area here. But they do have the Namco Mario Kart machine and other reasonably up to date machines.
*Gotten by on just ramen, water and oxygen (or some calorically-deficient analog) because you just had to have a game? If so, which one?
Closest I've come to this is when I bought the N64. This was kinda my first major "on my own" purchase, earned with money working part time in my father's retail mall store that he used to have (it was just minimum wage, so no, I was getting a preferential wage or anything). I put lay-away payments on it at the local EB Games (hey, remember layaway? You know, when you could reserve something and pay for it in cash in installments, as opposed to today where everyone is supposed to go into debt?). It took me all of that summer to eventually earn that money (working just a few days here and there, and of course I'm sure I spent some money on other stuff along the way).
I gave up on the N64, way too early, but the first couple of months were *amazing.* I remember taking VHS recordings of Mario 64 to school and blowing everyone away with how fast the 3D graphics moved.
*Bought an import game from any country? If so, which one(s)? (This question brought to you by someone determined to undermine fei's--and as collateral damage, CHI's--gamer cred.)
AS YOU KNOW, I imported Zangeki no Reginliev as my first import. Yes, this is supposed to damage my cred as an uber gamer and all that, and yes, I'm completely taking the bait by getting a little annoyed by this, but let's give everyone their satisfaction by making a defense:
Ok, ok, here is the deal: When I was 16, until I turned 25, I was a musician first, gamer second. So my money was spent on guitars, amplifiers, music peripherals, etc. etc. etc. So the money that was being spent on Radiant Silvergun V: Radiant In Space and Bonk's Adventure 2 Electric Boogaloo was instead being spent on Paul Reed Smith guitars (one of those equals a huge pile of any type of game). I played video games all throughout that time but it was not my primary diversion so I wasn't spending nearly as much money on it. I'm happy about that, because while I'm not pursuing that as a professional avenue anymore, I have skills that will last a lifetime, so that's a big win for me.
Meanwhile, I now get into it super super hardcore, to the point where I'm involved very intimately in the process of game making, but now I'm married with a family, so buying tons of import games, when I got student loans to pay, is, you know, hard. Certainly, Xenoblade is going to have to go on my short list, since it isn't gonna be an NOA release, and I'd love to get the sequel to Hotel Dusk on DS sometime. But I have responsibilities, and those kinds of extravagant acquisitions have to be carefully budgeted for :-)
*Named a pet/child/appendage after a videogame character?
One of our cats is named Zelda, so there you go! This was based off of my wife's pet guinea pig Zelda from when she was a kid.
