1. When relationships/jobs/etc. end, ALWAYS change your passwords.
2. ALWAYS make your passwords ARBITRARY strings of numbers and letters of differing cases.
3. NEVER let more than 6 months pass w/o changing your pw.
Failing to heed these simple rules can make your life a LIVING HELL in this day and age when you ARE your online persona and somebody with malicious designs can destroy your reputation before you've had time to check your inbox.
Thus endeth the lesson.

How I pick passwords: *Label A-Z 1-26. *Pick 7 letters and convert half of them to the corresponding numbers e.g.: **I pull A J K M R P Z. **I convert A to 1; K to 11; R to 18; and Z to 26. Then I just merge 'em and alternate case: 1j11M18p26[footnote:1]To memorize this arcane string of nonsense, repeat it at least 14x in your head OR write it down at least 14x OR ask yourself "what is my pw?" 14x--or all of the above.[/footnote] If that's too hard to remember, just go to three, random, message boards and take three screen names and mash them into a password (be sure to change case on some of the letters for added security as well as adding some numbers like subbing ll for 11 or 0 for o, etc.) Bam, a password that nobody is ever going to figure out because even you're not sure how you got there
