Since modern music really, really sucks ass for all kinds of reasons[footnote:1]There is good stuff out there, somewhere, but none of it seems to float up beyond the cdbaby indie cesspool so I can be aware of it.[/footnote], so I pretty much NEED the old bands to put out new records.
Thankfully, Van Halen just did that with "A Different Kind of Truth," an album which features the original band (including DAVID LEE FREAKING ROTH), minus Michael Anthony on bass (replaced by Eddie's son, Wolfgang!).
Early impressions:
It does NOT sound over produced, thank goodness. Sounds pretty raw. Roth is in superb voice. His voice sounds the same now as it did on Van Halen I in 1978 (this is rare for rock singers, so rejoice!).
So far, "Chinatown" stands out as a solid hard rocker but I haven't yet heard any "hits" in terms of bankable singles. Still, digging it a lot more than the last Van Halen album I bought, the awful, horrible abortion that was Van Halen III (in which they somehow waste the amazing singing talents of Gary Cherone of "No More Words" fame).
