The Thing (2011): Let me be honest: I went into this expecting it to be, at best, a pale, over-photocopied, version of the original so that probably colored my opinion from the get-go. Basically, it's pretty much as-advertised: a prequel to the John Carpenter horror super classic, minus most of the brooding paranoia that made that picture so freakinsly effective and, again, a super classic.
There's huge amounts of it lifted almost scene-for-scene from the original, which makes me wonder if an actual sequel (as proposed by Carpenter a few years ago) might have been a much better way to go (the comic book sequel published in the early 90s was actually pretty good in this regard, such as it is). Gone is much of the tension from guessing (impossibly in the original) who exactly is or isn't a 'thing'. Sure, there's some of that, but the tension never really ratchets up to where you're really worried that if a character turns his (or her--more on that in a second) back, they're going to get it, mainly because you're awre, at some level, that they're setting the character up for attack based on the preceding dialogue.
However, the worst offense is that this isn't so much a "Thing" movie as it is an Alien movie: basically, about half way through, it degenerates into Aliens, the Cameron classic. So, yeah, basially it becomes less a psychological torture chamber of the unknown and turns into a bug hunt. (This was obviously intentional since, if you're alert, you can see an insanely obvoius homage to Alien in the first third of the film.)
Bad CGI doesn't help (someday we'll actually get the lighting on organic matter correct...right?), and though it isn't completely terrible, it is pretty terrible when measured up against its legacy.

Across 110th Street Good crime flick, gets labeled as blaxploitation, but it's far above the average entry in the genre.
Kiss Me Deadly Crazy confusing noir, worth checking for the final act.
Minbo No Ona Fun and clever view of yakuza extortions, and the apathy of japanese society to deal with these problems. The director got beat up by yakuzas after the film was released, so it goes without saying that he struck a nerve with them.
From Beijing with Love Fun spoof of spy movies, it has a lot of that distinctive Hong Kong flavour of combining violence with slapstick comedy. Not bad but not Stephen Chow's best movie.
Lisztomania Franz Listz battles vampire Richard Wagner with his army of dead wives. I like.

Badlands I guess i'm stupid and don't get it, because this movie was long, tedious and pointless, but every single review i read describes it as a masterpiece.
The Iron Flag Not the best from Chang Cheh and the venoms, has it's moments. Go for Crippled Avengers or Kid with the Golden Arm instead.

Jack Kirby says "where's my royalty check" from beyond the grave.
(Yes, there are bits and pieces from other, Western, artists, but it's mostly Kirby, with a Bakshi 'feel' to the movie itself.)
And someone help me out: the main guy and girl are in the style of an artist whose name escapes me at the moment, and it's driving me nuts!

I liked Redline, sure, not a classic, and i'm pretty sure i forgot about half of the movie right after it finished. Is eye candy and nothing more, but it's tasty eye candy. Pretty cool soundtrack too.

John Carter: *totally* entertaining--think of it as a less campy, less cheesy, Flash Gordon. It's a fun ride and it galls me that it bombed as hard as it did since we won't get the other books. (How, in the name of God, do we live in a world where the Transformers films make insane amounts of money and this bombs??)

Wrath of the Titans: a boss rush without, ya know, the videogame part.
(It is *amazingly* terrible...perhaps more terrible than the last one which, I think, should lead to some sort of localized collapse of objective reality.)
Superman vs. The Elite: terrible by the standards of most of the direct-to-DVD DC stuff, which makes it about on par with the Marvel direct-to-DVD stuff.
