Thanks to ECM, who jogged my memory regarding this quirky mech game on the ps2:

The Saturn game(s) are actually better, but the PS2 game is also fun (oddly enough, the PS2 game is far more arcadey than the SS revs).

We need a list of good mecha games, that are very arcade/action oriented and not about "simulation" and endless micromanagement.

The SS revs weren't really sims, but they also didn't have power-ups lying around the terrain as in the PS2 rev which was just kinda silly (especially coming from the SS games).

I remember and love the SS Gungriffon games. The second one took some figgerin' because it was an import title, but I liked it even better than the first.
These games are some of the best 3D representations of the skim 'n' jump type mecha (ie the Dom) that Gundam popularised. Gungriffons don't *look* like Gundam but they sure move like them. I actually really like Gundam vs Zeta Gundam on the PS2. I think it has the best balance of playability, choice in machines, scenarios, and fan details. It is also huge.
But STILL I think Gungriffon, and its first person view, are perhaps the most coolest, most fun, representation I can recall.

Yes, I quite like the GG aesthetic where they are, essentially, tanks w/ legs.

I really liked these and remember being really excited for the PS2 one.
