probably my favorite "non super famous" 8 bit game is River City Ransom. It holds up real well too, the 8 bit graphics are really great for this kind of game.

I wasn't so big on 8-bit shooters, mainly because the arcade was my home in those days and shooters were way waaay better in the arcade than on 8-bit consoles/computers (like, I dunno, Tiger Heli!). (Unless we're talking Guardian Legend or some other Compile product.)

My experience echoes ECM's. I keep trying to dig into old shooters, but apart from Guardian Legend, I don't seem to be able to stomach older than early TG-16 games like Gunhed/Blazing Lazers.
Arcade is a different matter, yeah. Kind of funny how the things we grew up with can still inform what we prefer. I mean I've tacked on genres as they've developed... but my bread and butter games are still riffs on my old arcade habits.
