Yeah, I read that when it was new and it was terrible--iirc, it was part of the Millennium mega-crossover event and I was reading it as part of that wallet-emptying scheme by DC (Marvel did it, too: The Evolutionary War, Atlantis Attacks, etc.)
It had to be the most politically correct comic book I'd ever read (even though, at the time, I hadn't even heard of PC, so DC was out ahead of the curve on that misbegotten worldview) and they retconned that shit in a nanosecond.
Edit: seriously, it was really, really bad and should be required reading in *all* writing courses for how not to create a comic book and/or narrative. The whole 'United Colors of Benetton' team idea was fucking ludicrous.
This in an era when JLA/JLE/JLI etc. were basically the best book(s) on the market.
(And the only time Guy Gardner was awesome was when he was being used as comic relief in the aforementioned JL books!)
Edit 2: Went to the link and, yep: Millennium!
