So some pre-release chatter about Hyrule Warriors was that it was going to be nothing more than "Musou with Zelda skins" but having given the game some time, I have to disagree. The numerous Zelda elements (the items in how they are used, the boss fights, the art style, the music, the characters, etc.) that are incorporated into the game certainly go a long way but perhaps some of that is just my enjoyment of the Zelda series talking. Some initial thoughts, which I do need to update now that I have played the game a bit more since writing this the other day. I still think that the game needs online co-op; however, that really should not keep you from trying this out. This is the best Musou game I have played (I guess for reference, my previous favorite was BladeStorm). arcryphongames.wordpress.com/2014/09/27/initial-impressions-hyrule-warriors-nintendo-wiiu/

I second these thoughts, and Bladestorm was also, probably, my favorite warriors game until this one--but this one is head and shoulders better.
(I've beaten the game and done a good chunk of Adventure Mode.)

Re: Bladestorm, after playing a few DW games they started to blend together for me although admittedly I did not 'dive' into everything they had to offer. So as a variation on true Musou, whatever that is supposed to be, I thought BladeStorm was fresh. That and I like the 100 Years War for history (liberties taken or not) more than I care about which Chinese clan ruled China or what families they despised. Or which of the 500 different characters I'm supposed to care about.
Still, HW is more musou than BS and it is good. I need to grind on Legend Mode before I get back into Adventure Mode but Adventure is cool, boosting replay value for the game in my view.

Actually, I forgot about Crimson Sea 1 and 2--those would be above Bladestorm, tho I'm not sure which one of those I enjoyed more...but HW is still better!
(And shaddap, re: Bladestorm not a 'real' musou...)
(And go ahead: tell me CS1 and 2 aren't 'real' musou...then start running.)
(Oh, and one last thing: HW has it all over SW, DW, and DWG*!)
