I gave up on this genre years ago but, yeah, Zig's list is a good one if you want to get the full sweep of it.
(I suppose tacking StarCraft II on there might be an idea if you want to get the 'state of the art' take on it, too.)

there is Dune 2000 out there which is a modified version of Dune II. The one issue with II is originally you could only select one unit at a time (selecting multiple units is generally a big deal in these games) and 2000 fixes that.

The point was to introduce him chronologically to them, I think, so skipping past II to 2K kinda defeats that purpose, eh?
(Also: I'd suggest Dune II (Genesis) over Dune II (PC).)

I didn't suggest that he skip the chronology, just that he can look into D2k which fixes a few problems the original had and is a little more enjoyable. It's worth noting 2k if you play D2.
