So I went out and picked something up to help me start getting into some shape other than doughy around the mid-area.
Found this "Shockwave" weight, that's only five pounds but it's a spring loaded sort of thing to create more resistance in the work out. Came with a decent workout DVD as well.
Only problem was that during use last week I think it broke - seems like one of the springs came loose on one end, not sure how to open it up and fix it so I will take it back.
But I'm trying to get on the road to being more fit. Now to figure out a better diet...

My suggestion, if you don't have a lot of tie to devote to this stuff, is to just start paring back calories. So, for example, just start eating 25%, per meal, than you normally would.
OR.
If you drink beer. Stop. If you drink Coke drink Diet Coke instead.
Beyond that, we can get all sorts of crazy with the dieting, but that's really up to you.
That's all if you're attempting to lose weight.
To gain, you're going to need more weight and, well, more food unless you're already too heavy.

Fortunately I'm not a heavy guy - just around 130 lbs, and I'm trying to melt off my belly fat. Although I wouldn't mind packing some into the arms and just get into better shape in general. Last time I had a test some months ago I had high cholesterol which was a surprise so I've been working at controlling that too.

Cholesterol is one of those false positives that we spend TONS of time combating but, like salt intake, actually has a marginal impact on health. (In other words, high LDL cholesterol is *correlated* to heart problems, but it's actually a pretty weak correlation, just like dietary salt intake.)
Note: I am not suggesting you ignore since I'm not going to be responsible if a doctor says you're going to die because of it (you won't--at least not because of the cholesterol), so don't ignore him! (Also: drink more wine.)
As for adding mass, if you don't want to spend much money, invest in a chin-up bar. From there you can just start doing chin-ups and push-ups, etc., every day.
(Like, do 3 sets of 10 reps of each once/day.)

Only reason I started thinking about cholesterol was last year we signed up for life insurance and my rating landed me in a more expensive tier. I've been trying to eat more Cheerios as a result.
