Speaking of the NUON version (which I loved, although not as much as 2k, I still "beat" it by passing level 128. I have never hated a level more than I hated 118 on that game.
This is one of the slower tracks made just for T3k

There's also the two fan-made Tempest clones/remakes: Typhoon 2001 (T2K Update/Remake): Tsunami 2010 (T3K Update/Remake): Typhoon is the better game, though, and those of you that have never played T2K should, really, as it's one of the best games ever made. (No, you did not read that wrong.) For those that have played T2K, try messing w/ the camera options on Typhoon and you'll likely agree that it almost turns it into a true sequel and puts it more in line w/ what Minter originally intended. Edit: Links for both: T2K1T2K10You can heap appreciation on me after you play them.

I've played Tsunami but I must have overlooked Typhoon, thanks for the link.
If I had the monetary means, I'd gladly fund an effort to make something like Typhoon/T2k remake for arcades these days. It's still very much an arcade style game and it would be best to play it with a rotary again. I don't care all that much for remakes but this is one of the exceptions I could go for.

I'm actually a little surprised (OK, not really) that Atari (such as it is) doesn't just buy it, slap the name Tempest: Eye of the Storm on it, and post it up on Steam/XBLA/PSN. It's still every damn bit as good now as it was then (Hell, it's Tempest: how bad could it be?) I'd actually damn near kill for a rev on 3DS because this is one game that actually screams for 3D.

One would think that Atari would do that considering that lately they've decided to just use their library as an advantage. The remake of Tempest on XBLA sucked; Warlords wasn't that great either so they've gone about remaking it for XBLA again.

Atari is a shell of a company. The best thing that could happen to them is they went under and some semi-intelligent company bought up their library while there's still some value left in it. (Modern era Atari has done a spectacularly bad job as stewards of some of the gaming world's original, super-high-value, IP.)

That's for certain. I had high hopes when hasbro first bought them but those were quickly dashed; Infogrames has done a better job than Hasbro did but at the end of the day, it's still IG with the Atari name. I know the old Atari will never come back but some semblance of it would be nice.
I guess we need more music in this thread. So here's a nice Commander Keen 4 remix:

Shatter is to Breakout what Tempest 2K is to Tempest, which makes Shatter undiluted awesome.
(The PC and PS3 revs are a mere $3, too, so you kinda don't have an excuse to not buy it.)
