Mainly on console, since the DS, up until recently, was still getting a steady stream of the more traditional variety.
Personally, I actually kinda skipped most of the PS2 generation because I got really, really tired of the flood on PS1, but over the last couple of years I found myself picking up a number on DS (can't say I loved them all, but there were a few good ones), but *not* on console, where the crap-to-quality ratio is dizzyingly high. (When FFXIII isn't even, in all but the loosest sense, an RPG anymore, something has gone seriously wrong somewhere.) Hell, has there been a really good JRPG on consoles this gen? If so, I'm not aware of it...
Anyway, who still gets excited about these? Anyone?
P.S. I was a huge fan of the genre in the 16-bit era, but my interest in them hasn't really been the same since though, as I said, it's better now (when they don't make any good ones on console!) than it's been in years.

It's also an abomination (and probably also the future for the series, that doesn't involve endless remakes).
I've heard this about Enchanted Arms, but I've also heard it's absolutely wretched.
I did recall one I kinda-sorta liked but, in the end, combat seemed awfully arbitrary. It's name? Last Remnant.
And you're probably the first person to characterize Star Ocean as 'kick ass' (on PS360). Most people have told me it's just kinda bleh outside of the combat which, apparently, is very good?
I tried Lost Odyssey but whatever some are seeing in it, I'm not. (I also tried Blue Dragon, but the less said about that the better.)
There's also Xenoblade (for the first four hours, anyway), which probably wins this gen almost by default, though it is very, very good for those four hours (stopped on the promise of an English version and looks like that was a good idea).
I'll have to look into RoF some more since I know someone (can't remember who!) told me it was awesome.

I'm going to be in the vicinity of a GameStop/Best Buy today, so I might just pick thi sup for cheap and give it a shot. But if you're wrong, I'm coming to your town to take it out on your (stupid) neighbors, re: what we talked about the other night, so watch out! They'll pay for your sins! That'll show you!

I really liked Eternal Sonata a LOT. Unfortunately in the fever pitch of grad school I traded it in, so I actually gotta rebuy it so I can finish the game! Fun combat system and a really enjoyable story (Chopin! Dying! You are IN HIS MIND).
Anyone play Tri-Crescendo's next game, Fragile Dreams? It was panned critically, but did any of you folks try it?

Yeah, I did: it sucked. Slow, boring, lackluster gameplay. Unless you're really into angtsy Japaense existentialism (as far as that goes in an ARPG, anyway), skip it hard.

Did you play Eternal Sonata, perchance?

Yeah, and it didn't do much for me (and I LOVE Chopin!) BUT, it's a helluva lot better than Fragile Dreams which is just boooooring. Trust me. You'll be wasting your money if you buy it--it's just not a good ARPG, period.
Besides, if you're taking this much time w/ OOT, there's literally no chance a C-grade game like FD will capture your attention.

Good grief, you are on the freaking warpath on OoT!!! As you know all of my gaming time has been taken with EDF!

OOT or EDF, OOT or EDF...yeah, I don't think you're going to get a lot of sympathy for that position around here. (And I bet Borsalio loves OOT, too...*twists knife*.)

Borsalio does, but he actually likes it less than ALTTP.

Silence, suck up! You played OOT already! (Didn't you? Or was that one of the games you managed to not play ever that still has me agog?)
As for Borsalio, what's your point? I like ALTTP more, too, and, amazingly, I still managed to get through OOT centuries ago. Just like Zig, who's fomenting discord for his own, maniacal, ends!
Moral of the story: FINISH OOT, SLACKER! (Cause I can alraedy see what's going to happen: you'll be embroiled in EDF for the next month or so and, in the interim, completely forget about OOT and it'll never get finished. We call this the "Justin effect"--don't be a Justin!)

C'mon man, I don't do that sort of thing! I've literally gone back and finished games that have been on the backlog for years! I hate backlogs!
I do decide to stop playing games that aren't fun, of course. See: Shadow Wars 3DS: a good game, but just too many missions of the same kinda thing.

Borsalio does, but he actually likes it less than ALTTP. Obligatory Zelda Ranking LttP > Link's Awakening > OOT > Zelda 2 > Zelda 1 > WW > MM > Zelda CD-i > TP Kidding about the CD-i, of course. But I hold all the Zeldas save TP in high regard, so I like MM a lot even if it's the second lowest. But yeah, you need to go finish OOT, it's a great game that you need to have played. As for the original JRPG question, that will wait until I have more time to type.
